A Crash Course in Counter-Intelligence

a somewhat random conglomeration of ideas and images brought to you by Michael S. Hennessey, poet, "professor," rabid reader, guitar-thrummer, Phillies fan and managing editor of PennSound.

ps- why I’ll still be a WERS fan (from 884 miles away)

My alma mater’s station, one of the nation’s best, actually got me to listen to the radio again (for something other than NPR or the Phillies game).  How’d pull off that minor miracle?  An incredibly diverse playlist, which simultaneously manages to deliver many of my old favorites, and introduces me to new music (which, in this glorious age of information anarchy, can be easily downloaded).

By way of example, in the hour or so that I’ve been listening (while burning the midnight oil towards a quickly-approaching deadline), I’ve been treated to Neil Young, Beck, Wilco, Patti Smith, U2, Radiohead, Squeeze, Jens Lekman, the Dandy Warhols, the Beatles and the Velvet Underground (among others).  I might miss peering into their aquarium-esque studios while trudging down Tremont on my way to the WLP offices, but, with a clear and strong streaming feed, part of me will always be in Eastie, listening.*  Check them out immediately!

(* Admittedly, I miss a lot of things about Boston. Prime among them: the Beantown Pub, the Raven, the ICA, Santarpio’s, the Harvard Book Store,  Piers Park, the Blue Line, Haymarket, Winter on Washington Street … along with a great many friends from Emerson, most of whom I’ve already fallen hopelessly out of touch with.) (Who, and what, I wonder, will I miss most about Philly the second time around?) (Also, what lengths will I go to to avoid the work I need to do?)
